India’s Sania Mirza and Elena Vesnina of Russia turned their off-court friendship into a tennis partnership when they clinched their first premier series title as a pair on Saturday, bagging the $4.5 million WTA tournament in Indian Wells. The Indo-Russian combine dispatched the seeded American duo of Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Meghann Shaughnessy 6-0, 7-5 in the final to cap a fine fortnight at the Tennis Garden arena where they stormed to the title without dropping a set. Sania and Elena, who were quarterfinalists at Dubai and Doha last month, were unseeded in Indian Wells. The 24-year-olds got off to a blistering start, pocketing the first set in 25-minutes. However, they were down 1-5 in the second set before they reeled off six games in a row. |

Sania Mirza and her cricketer husband will have their love for sports really tested should arch rivals India and Pakistan meet during the ICC Cricket World Cup that gets under way from tomorrow.
"Being sports people we both really enjoy sports. Even my uncles and my father have played sports at some level. So I've always followed cricket. And when India was playing Pakistan [in the Asia Cup] he [Malek] was supporting Pakistan and I was rooting for India," Mirza told media on the sidelines of the Dubai Duty Free Women's Open.
"It's almost like a fun thing that we compete with each other and we have bets [whenever India and Pakistan play]. This is because we love sports that much. We enjoy healthy competition," she added.

Sania Mirza booked a berth in the women's singles main draw of the Australian Open with an easy straight sets victory over Canada's Stephanie Dubois, here on Sunday.
The 24th seed Indian triumphed 6-2 6-3 in one hour and 13 minutes in the third and final round of the qualifying competition.

It was a firm, but quietly spoken declaration. "I'm in the best shape of my life," Sania Mirza, in the midst of a comeback run, said. "I'm striking the ball better than I have in the last 18-months, feeling it better. I can still be a lot better, I know, and that's where my focus is."
The 24-year-old Indian, who arrived in Auckland early on Monday to kick-start her 2011 campaign at the $220,000 ASB Classic, starting January 3, has reason to be upbeat about her fortunes after an injury ravaged 2010 threatened to halt her career. Despite the reverses, Sania signed off the year on a high in Dubai 10 days ago where she clinched the $75,000 ITF event. The title triumph helped Sania climb more than 20 places in the WTA rankings to 141. |

The Indian hopes of a gold medal in the Asian Games women's singles tennis event were dashed when Sania Mirza settled for a bronze after losing to third seed Akgul Amanmuradova in the semifinals on Sunday.
Sania lost the long-drawn-out battle, that lasted two hours and 49 minutes, against the big-serving Uzbek rival 7-6 (7), 3-6, 4-6 by committing a number of forehand errors to exit from the competition.
In the other semifinal, China's Peng Shui shocked top seed Kimiko Date-Krumm of Japan 7-6 (6) 3-6 6-2 to advance to the gold medal match against Amanmuradova.
Both the losing semifinalists, Sania and Date-Krumm, won bronze medals as there is no play-off for third place.
Sania committed five double faults when she was serving for the first set at 5-4. Later she led 6-2 in the tie-break before it became 6-6 before she finally clinched it 9-7. |

Tennis star Sania Mirza believes that the day is not far when Ranchi, hometown of India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, will produce a top-class tennis player.
"I will pray that a tennis player should emerge from Ranchi as M S Dhoni emerged for cricket," said Sania, who inaugurated a tennis academy here today.
"I have heard a lot about Ranchi and I had a wish to see the town, and I grabbed the opportunity when I was invited for the inauguration of this tennis academy," she added.
Sania also hoped that the academy, which will start with 50 budding talents, would throw up good tennis players in the days to come. |
