Aus open: Sania advances to third round

Three years ago, Sania Mirza first hit the headlines at the Australian Open with her match against Serena Williams. Now, established as one of the popular players on the women's tennis circuit, she goes up against Venus Williams in the third round on Saturday.

The occasion is not lost on the 21-year-old Sania. "I'm just excited to play her. Probably play on a big court and in front of a big crowd. Three years ago when it all started, I played Serena and now I'm playing Venus in the third round," said Sania.

Sania accused of insulting tricolour

A lawyer in Madhya Pradesh has filed a case against tennis star Sania Mirza for allegedly dishonouring the national flag during her visit to Australia.

Sania, representing India at the Hopman Cup in Australia, has been caught on camera watching a match putting her feet right in front of the national flag of India.

Sania looks to new year with hope

ImageThe new year has an old smell and it is that familiar scent called confidence. Everyone carries it, in tiny fists and pristine gym bags, certain in their hearts this will be their year. When the calendar turns in tennis, it is like starting over. By summer some muscles will complain, some forehands misfire, but for now, January, everyone is entitled to hope.

The new season is a time of new balls, new clothes, new bodies, but most of all new beginnings. Sania Mirza, whose 2007 was arrested by injury, says from her hotel room in Perth: “In the new year, you think better things will come".

Sania apologises for shooting inside the mosque premises

Tennis star Sania Mirza, who earned the ire of Islamic fundamentalists for shooting on the Mecca Masjid premises, tendered an "unequivocal" apology on Thursday. In a letter to the Imam of the Mecca Masjid, she said: "It is with a deep sense of remorse that I apologise to all my brothers and sisters and respected elders who have been anguished by my unwittingly entering a portion of land belonging to Mecca Masjid while filming the Charminar with the intention of promoting the heritage monument which is symbolic of our city."

Mecca Masjid withdraws case against Sania

Seems like Sania Mirza will get a respite from the Mecca Masjid controversy. Masjid officials have asked police to withdraw the case against the tennis star. Sania had later apologised for shooting a commercial in the Masjid premises on December 13.

Police though are yet to take a decision on withdrawing the case. However, there is no word on the case filed against the advertising agency. The case had been registered against Sania in connection with the shooting for a commercial in the historic Mecca mosque in Hyderabad.

 A patch-up between Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi for the sake of country's Olympic campaign was a bright note to end an year in which senior pros disappointed and youngsters shone in patches.

As the Olympic year beckons, India's medal hopes got a fillip with Bhupathi announcing and Paes endorsing that they are game to shake hands and pair up for the quadrennial extravaganza. If 2006 ended on a sour note when Lee-Hesh parted ways, this announcement brought smiles on the faces of the game's lovers in the country.

2007 was the best year of my career so far: Sania

 A knee surgery may have kept Sania Mirza out of action for two months but a career-best singles ranking of 27 and a slew of wins over top 20 players convince her that she had the best year of her career so far.

Bouncing back from the surgery to touch new heights this year, Sania proved her initial success was not a flash in the pan and says it was a "personal victory" for her in the breakthrough year. "It was a successful year for me - perhaps my best so far. And it was a personal victory for me to have done reasonably despite the knee surgery that also took away 10 weeks from my year," Sania told PTI.

Sania to take Adidas globally

Tennis star Sania Mirza was on Monday signed by world's leading sports brand addidas as its first global brand ambassador.


Announcing this, Hartwin Feddersen, director of marketing, adidas India said: "Sania is one of the most recognisable faces of global tennis and is a youth icon amongst young Asians across the world. Her appeal goes well beyond tennis and the sporting world and it's only natural for us to use her as a global brand ambassador."
